Weighing about 1.5 kilograms, the liver is undoubtedly the busiest organ as it’s responsible of detoxifying the body. In naturopathy, you can’t start any treatment if you have not first made sure that the liver is working properly since it is the number one caveat for holistic health. Each minute, the liver processes around 3 pints of blood to remove nutrients, toxins, carcinogens and other waste. The toxins will either be dismantled or stored according to their volume. If the liver is heavily burdened and the toxins accumulate, then the body will break out with the following physical symptoms: flu, itching, diarrhoea, acne, headaches, insomnia, eczema and chronic fatigue. As prevention is always the best cure, one of the things you can do to protect your liver is eating raw beetroots. The raw, fresh beetroot helps clean the liver and support detoxification, and I think the easiest way to consume them raw is in soups or juices. When I did chemotherapy, this juice was my elixir! It really made me happy to start my day with such a bright red juice. In the green smoothie challenge week, I thought of trying to turn my favourite juice into a smoothie, and it was just as delicious!
