I am pretty sure that now with the lockdown we all did a bit more baking (and eating) than usual for our beloved ones Hanky, my 4 year SLT tops that list for me, therefore when I saw this recipe that a friend posted on facebook I had to try it. To be honest Hanky is super greedy, he even eats any kale leaves that fall off my salad bowl, so he is not a difficult one to please. But he loved these biscuits which I used as a morning treat before his walk (he usually has his Bella & Duke breakfast after this morning walk). It is a super easy recipe with no mixer needed, and you can prepare them in 30mins (including the baking time)The original recipe can be found at www.yourcookingpartner.wordpress.com, but I modified it a bit to add in nutritional rich ingredients which are not only super tasty but also super healthy for dogos. I’ ve added some Bella & Duke Bonnie broth which is good for joint and bone health, supports the digestive system and makes the coat super shiny, a bit of curcumin, which is great in reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system and a can of sardines, which are rich in Vit D and good Omega3s to support immunity and reduce inflammation, and some ground flaxseeds, to boost even more his Omega 3s. so generally with all these additions, these biscuits become a good ally to reduce inflammation usually implicated in arthritis and joint issues, so is a good treat to consider for your older dogs who might suffering more arthritis. They will love both the taste and the nutrients packed inside. I ve also added inside as a surprise treat his favourite Bella & Duke duck mini training biscuits.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of buckwheat or spelt flour (or all purpose flour if it’s the only one you have handy)
- 1 tbs of ground turmeric
- 1 tbs ground flaxseed
- 1 egg
- 1 tbs extra virgin olive oi or melted coconut oil or flaxseed oil
- ½ cup of Bella & Duke bonnie broth (if you don’t have any you can use a beef stock diluted in ½ cup of water to add to the taste, but will clearly lack the nutrients packed in home made bone broth)
- 1 tbs grated cheese (I used parmesan)
- 1 tin of sardines in brine (you will use both the brine and the sardines)
- A handful or mini duck training treats from Bella & Duke
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180C
- Mix the dry ingredients (flour, turmeric, flaxseed and cheese) in a big bowl.
- Smash the sardines (bones included) in the tin with a fork.
- Boil the broth in order to liquidify.
- Mix the egg (without the shell), broth and sardines and whatever oil you are using with the dry ingredients and stir well with a spoon. You should have a slightly sticky mixture that stays on the spoon. Adjust with some extra flour or bone broth if needed.
- Fill in your moulds with the mixture. I used this really cute bone shaped silicon moulds which I bought from amazon, but any moulds or cutters would work to give shape. These are the ones I use to make his bonnie broth ice lollies in the summer.
- If you want you can add in one of your dogs favourite treats inside (not that is needed but as am extra), I used (https://www.bellaandduke.com/product/mini-duck-training-bones/
- Bake for around 20-30 mins until they start getting a nice gold colour
- Leave to cool and store in an air tight container. You can keep them for weeks in the container, depending on how greedy your pup is!
