The third day of my juice fasting went well, just as I expected it as the body is now used to the smaller energy load and hunger is less. I had a difficult day since I travelled back to London, but I never felt that I was tired, or that I did not have any energy.
I started my day with a terrific hot almond milk beverage with cocoa and superfood: as enjoyable as having hot chocolate. My snack was “kiwi and shielding” with apple, kiwi and orange – a bomb of vitamin C that protects the DNA. For lunch, I had no soup but a purple detoxifying juice with beetroot, apple and orange instead. In the afternoon while the airport, I had the amazing “Mint and Breath” with orange, carrot, ginger and peppermint. An incredibly cool and very special juice, definitely the best of the day. Paradoxically, on Tuesday afternoon I wasn’t caught by afternoon hunger that had caught me in the past two days: an indication that my body has begun getting used to fasting. I only had Yogi tea on the plane, and when I landed I opened my suitcase and had the “green enhancer” with spinach, carrot, parsley and apple. I slept feeling a little tired because of the journey but my stomach was full.
I admit that I began to see the benefits of fasting on the third day: I was physically light, full of energy and well-being, with no trace of fatigue and the weight that catches onto you after a meal when the digestive system begins to metabolize food. I also noticed that I felt unusually calm and concentrated these days, and it was easier for me to meditate than other times. I did not notice any glow on my face and skin, (it is said that it’s a benefit of detoxification), but I think more fasting days are needed to see that. What fills you with positive emotions is the idea that you offer so many nutrients and do something good to yourself. It’s like taking your digestive system for a spa session! How often do we do this over time? It’s a great convenience as you don’t have to cook and think about what you will eat, since someone else has done it for you. It is also a great surprise and excitement opening up the colourful jars to try out the flavour of the juice. I slept very well all these three days, and I really felt way less hungry than I imagined.
My feelings on the third day were so positive that I regretted not doing the five-day fast because I thought the first two days were difficult, but then the body gets used to this new diet and its benefits, and I was particularly pleased with the feelings of being calm and light. Next time, I will be doing the 5-day diet for sure!
And because I just know you will ask me about my weight, when I weighed myself today I was as heavy as I was before the holidays (and believe me when I say that I ate very much during the holidays). I don’t know how much weight I’ll gain when I turn to solid forms of food, but I don’t really care at all because that’s not the reason I did the fast. Surely, the fact that you live with fewer calories, even temporarily, is evident on the scale.
Overall, my experience was very positive, and I would suggest it unconditionally once or twice a year when we think we have severely exhausted our digestive system and need to give it a little rest. I also deliberately tried not to lock myself in the house, and to do what I would normally do to see how it would go, and I admit I did not have any difficulty anywhere.
Nevertheless, I would suggest:
– Try fasting around spring, when it’s a little warmer and our body has less energy requirements, and having a cool juice makes you enjoy it more. Following the cycle of nature, it is the ideal time for detoxification and rejuvenation of the body. I did it on the coldest winter days and it was fine, but if you have any doubts or want to try it for the first time, then spring or summer may be the most appropriate seasons.
– Choose to have the fast during a period that is not particularly energy demanding and you can spend more hours at home.
– If you can combine fasting and some activity that calms your spirit, then have some walks around nature and meditation. That way, you can benefit from the feelings of clarity during fasting even more!
